Gynaecology Pelvic Ultrasound
Gynaecology Pelvic Scan
Gynaecological Pelvic ultrasound: is the procedure used to assess & visualise organs and structures within the female pelvis. It allows us to gain a baseline record of structures in the pelvis. We are able to see the cervix, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes & bladder.
Pelvic ultrasound may be performed using one or both of two methods:
Transabdominal (through the abdomen)
Or
Transvaginal (via the vagina)
Both methods can generate good results, however when we compare the difference in image quality regarding detail within the pelvic organs the method of choice is Transvaginal. We can explain this in more simple terms eg: looking from across the abdomen (transabdominal) is like "seeing a tree from a distance and not being able to clearly make sense of the foliage on it" but if we use binoculars we can "see in clear detail the tiny leaves within the tree" which would be for us the use of the transvaginal method of ultrasound.
